I play between the two styles myself and I cannot say that I give any more of myself to one style or the other...and the other is, of course, geometric abstraction. For me, abstract expressionism is more fun to do, easier to execute and relies greatly on chance. Geometric abstraction is more serious and precise with little or no chance and takes longer to do as everything is carefully considered. So it's all just about the type of work I'm doing. I'm not giving anymore of my soul to one style or the other.

This brings me to my most recent geometric painting called Architectones. It took a long time for me to get this work right. I went over and over it many times to get the colours just right. I had difficulty with the finish. I didn't want it to be too flat but I didn't like the stippled effect I went with in the first place and each time I went over it I had to deal with the straight edges. It wasn't fun to do... it was a pain in the butt quite frankly but paradoxically did cause some emotion in the form of effing and blinding.

Here it is...

Architectones

60x76cm

Oil on canvas

2021

Jane Pearretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10402957234104830952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042146446803278097.post-34730027326157329712020-11-11T00:35:00.001-08:002020-11-11T00:35:20.682-08:00Watch it: Offendend by Irvine Welsh will air on Sky Arts on 17th November
Every year, leading up to Christmas, my partner Robin would post John Heartfield's Christmas tree bent into the shape of a swastika on Facebook. If you don't know about John Heartfield I can tell you that he wasn't a Nazi. He made great political art against Hitler and the Nazis. Just the title of the piece tells you what he is saying.

Anyway, last time Robin did this Facebook removed the image and warned him that it was sensitive and he was a naughty boy for using it and that he could be blocked because of it etc.

Of course this was insulting to both Robin and his FB friends' intelligence as obviously this image could only insult real Nazis, most of whom are dead and idiots who don't understand that you shouldn't take a work of art at face value.

This brings me to censorship and how it kowtows to people who go around looking, yes, seeking out, things to offend them, thus making the world around us blander by the minute. We should push back against this strongly to keep our freedoms safe as they are in danger of being removed by Big Tech and various institutions for the sake of individuals or relatively small groups with specific agendas.

So make sure you watch Offended by Irvine Welsh on Sky (17th November) if, like me, you are at all interested where your country is going in terms of freedom of expression.

John Heartfield
O Christmas Tree in German Soil, How Crooked Are Your Branches
1934

Jane Pearretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10402957234104830952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042146446803278097.post-77976206362656772132020-11-09T04:35:00.001-08:002020-12-28T06:10:42.827-08:00New work

There's nothing like the sale of a painting to inspire new work. A few weeks ago I sold a painting that I'd done in 2014 and shipped it off to America. It was odd because the very next week I had another offer on the very same painting but it was already sold. What are the chances of that happening, especially as the work was not new? Anyway, spurred on by the fact that some people still do buy art I've stepped up a gear and, in addition, I've been made redundant now from my part-time job so I've got more time which I don't intend to waste.

Before it was harder to focus as every day I had to leave the house by 12.30 to do my afternoon job. I still managed to get things done but it was sporadic. So I am enjoying my new found freedom for a while at least.

I'm enjoying painting this new work in which I've set out a design with oil painting pens and working with analogous greens and blues to satisfy my love of lines and colour. I made a sketch initially which I've altered in the painting a bit.

Anyway must get on!

The sketch

The painting in progress.

Jane Pearretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10402957234104830952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042146446803278097.post-8259220721612065442020-11-01T11:02:00.003-08:002020-11-01T11:02:58.267-08:00Square painting

In reference to those competition painting programmes on TV...

"I'd rather paint a square than watch a square painting."😆

A classic quote from my partner in artcrime Robin Tomens.

Jane Pearretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10402957234104830952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042146446803278097.post-43405091718343853522020-10-31T01:40:00.003-07:002020-10-31T01:40:55.532-07:00Prices Paid and the changing face of London Town

London has always been a changeable place but the process of change is speeding up. I regularly find myself in places that I don't recognise; places that have been done-up: bars added, restaurants added, modern, large-scale, planted up neatly and professionally, with a nod to the arts. Or maybe just vast areas dedicated to offices, all trying to compete with each other with their particular architectural signature. Or just slightly run-down streets with failing businesses being replaced by other businesses in the blink of an eye.

In Kentish Town there was a shop called Bluston's which hung on for years. We always remarked on it for it was so out of place being an old-fashioned ladies fashion shop. The sign, shop front, curved glass windows and floor tiles all seemed to hark back to the old days. The way the mannequins were placed in the window and what they wore always fascinated us.

The digital prints I've made below are made from photographs that Robin took one day which luckily he managed to get before the shop finally succumbed to its inevitable fate.
I vow not to moan about IT. By IT I mean THE PLAGUE. Even though I've just been made redundant from my part-time job because of the ongoing reaction to IT. I haven't got IT but that doesn't make any difference as IT moves in mysterious ways and has taken control of the humanoid mind.

Still IT has given me even more free time than I had before so that's kind of good. I sold a painting the day after I was told I would be made redundant which seemed like a pointer to do more painting. So I am.

I'm reworking a painting from a few years back. This work is in oils but I got a really bad headache the first day using them from the turpentine used to mix the colours. After researching alternatives I'm now using Gamsol by Gamblin, an excellent choice with no smell and less toxicity. It's such a relief as I was beginning to think that I may not be able to use oils any more and that would be a shame as acrylics are not as good for me. I recommend this product for anyone suffering from headaches caused by solvents.

The painting I'm working on has autumnal colour tones which coincidentally echo the turning colours in the garden. I like painting this time of year as going out in the garden gets less appealing but I'm still enjoying the garden by working near the window. One snag is the failing light but I grab a bit more by turning the easel towards the window as time goes on.

Anyway I hope anyone reading this is not suffering to badly from IT as IT is one of those things that affects people in so many different ways. All I can say is let's all pray to the Cosmos that IT buggers off to infinity soon.

Fume free painting...what a relief!

Jane Pearretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10402957234104830952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6042146446803278097.post-21390311520785056652020-10-25T06:45:00.003-07:002020-10-31T06:14:04.485-07:00New work
This is an old post that I forgot to publish...

Compared to my partner in art crime, Robin Tomens, I am VERY, VERY s l o w. For me, all this time has resulted in doing not more but less art. I'm still producing though, quite slowly. Here is my most recent painting in a series connected to the three works in the previous post. These paintings are produced by printing and scraping the paint using crude bits of card rather than brushes and thus the end result is less fine than my more hard-edge geometric work. Working like this is freer and quicker and with more glitches and chance thrown into the mix and I like the results. This technique is really a combination of print and paint.

Scape 4

Acrylic on Canvas

50 x 40 x 2 cm

2020

Before painting the canvas was prepared with paper and fabric for texture. Nuanced mixes of greens, yellows and greys make up the background then a dark blue/black was dragged, diagonally out to the edges. Ochre and grey squares stamped on and a pale disc to the top right added which matches the pale coloured wave-like lines in the bottom left. Well it makes sense to me anyway!

This series is entirely abstract but all have a quality to them that mimic seascapes, landscapes or the lines of city buildings but this happens without full intention on my behalf.

There's so much enjoyment that comes from appreciating the art of others but it's not often considered how much joy, or shall I say, satisfaction the artist gets out of the process.

A style such as precise representational painting may be difficult to execute but at the end of the day all that attention to detail can end up being just a nice picture that looks like a photo. In non-representational painting (such as geometric abstraction), which I have done in the recent past, there may also be a lot of technical discipline needed to create the work, meaning it will take days if not weeks to finish. Of course, all this is absolutely fine if it's what one thrives on doing but in my quest to find a way of working that suits my lifestyle and aesthetic desires I've recently moved towards a method which is freer in execution and rougher in application. This way of working has proved surprisingly satisfying for me.

Now I have taken to pulling paint over canvas using humble cardboard to apply it. Using acrylic paint means I can't hang around too long as the paint will dry but I can completely indulge in my lust for colour, placement of forms and texture too, which is often omitted in my more formal abstract pieces.

These three new canvases follow on from Dark Matter 1 and 2 which had similarities to screen printing in that I pulled the paint in a thick wadge across the surface of the paper, then added other imprints and stains.

All three pieces have a cityscape-type quality, which is accidental. They are actually just colours, forms and textures. Anyway, I'm not ashamed to say that these were simple for me to do but there is something wonderful about simplicity and spontaneity and I got an easy pleasure from making them. I'm pleased overall with how they've turned out so I will be doing a few more and exploring what this way of painting has to offer me...for a while at least.

Here's another version of Dark Matter. I made this and the previous one very quickly and was pleased with the results. At the moment I'm working on something similar but larger and I've been stopping and starting whilst making it and it isn't working at all. Which just goes to show that there's something to be said for starting and finishing in one session. It's a sort of holistic thing I reckon.

I'm breaking away from my usual techniques with new ways of working. The issue for me is that the way I often work can be too precise. This can cause me to spend too long without working and induce block. So I'm limbering up with a looser approach both in application and in materials. I may not stick to this but for now it's good.

Sometimes I buy art materials with one intention and then forget what it was only to use it a year or so later for something completely different. I found, as a result of this, some natural paper tucked away and slightly damaged. This was perfect for some experimentation.
It's Boxing Day and WE are playing with a present I bought for my partner in crime. A little set of rubber stamps. Yesterday, Christmas Day, we started with a row...classic Xmas dysfunction. Then we spent the whole morning cooking: a nut roast and a vegan gravy for the vegetarians and a traditional turkey dinner for the carnivores. A small family gathering ensued and we had a lovely time.

Today we've been playing with the stamps and without realising it have made a work which echoes the argument we had yesterday.

My new bolthole is Folkestone in Kent. Only 55 minutes from St Pancras on the fast train and you're there by the sea. There are lovely walks along the white cliff tops where on October 11th we picked wild apples, saw butterflies coupling and wild violets in flower; plus a really strange-looking long beetle that crossed our path. It was a warm and sunny day so I guess the wildlife was enjoying it as much as we were. We came across a Battle of Britain memorial site and nosed around in there taking fotos of the replica planes, which were impressive even though they were copies. This foto is the result of getting in close and personal to the aeroplanes.

Generally I go to France every year for my holiday. This year I was in Arcachon near Bordeaux. They are big on oysters there and this was the first time I have eaten them. The experience was very rustic; the kitchen was a basic hut and the tables on the edge of an inlet of sea water with all its associated smells.

This area has countless oyster fishing boats and huts. The huts are mostly black in colour and all quite similar but are often personalised in some way. They are endlessly charming. A few of them were burnt down and left in a pile of charred wood and rusting metal.

I decided to take some detailed shots as I'm fascinated by the way rust creates its own form of beautiful and rhythmical abstraction like many other elements in nature.

I decided to use the rust images in a collage but to alter them further. In addition, I had recently bought a second-hand book on Hans Richter which I had been flicking through. In his late abstract work he makes a series of collages in a variety of mediums using a wedge-type curving shape. I have used a similar kind of shaping to create the sections of my piece as they have an organic, living and directional quality to them.

I often name my artworks after I have made them. This is because I don't make too much representational art and very abstract pieces are difficult to name because they are so indirect. So this morning after weeks of looking at the end product on my wall I decided to name it Shoal as it reminded me of the rhythmical spacing of fish when they swim together and this name also takes the piece back to where it came from which is the realm of the sea.
I do hate scaffolding going up. I can't stand the whole process. It plunges us into darkness and has multiple ways of making our lives harder. I decided therefore to see what a few photos would reveal. I took a selection of frames of the joints, cut them out and made a collage of the clamps using them to create a triad of flower-like metallic figures, complete with bolts for petals. This happened, it seemed, quite naturally as the cut-out clamps had an organic quality to them and like flowers they have colour; rusty browns, yellows and metallic silvers and greens plus some reflection from our actual garden. They are clunky and ungainly but retain some kind of elemental beauty which is often revealed when getting up close and personal to a subject.
The scaffolding is still up but I have got something from it which is a good thing.
I wanted to look at the use of garish pink in relation to women and girls. Have you noticed the proliferation of pink on magazine covers? There are two or three variations of pink commonly used as long as they look fake, unnatural and cheap. I have also noticed this filtering into products for female children and regularly see little girls decked out from head to foot in nasty pink including prams and bikes. I find this disturbing and insidious and wonder about its symbolism and why it has become so extreme. In the work below I have taken the text from some popular women's magazine covers to fill and distort the figure of a model. I have repeated the image multiple times and reworked it both in and out of the computer. This work was included in issue 6 of Timglaset magazine.

As we come towards to the end of 2017 I thought it would be good to share what I think is one of my best works from this year. I made this for issue no.7 of a Swedish arts magazine called Timglaset. The theme was 'Errata' which triggered me into Dada mode. It seemed to me that this movement, being quite nihilistic and anti-aesthetic, would work well with the theme.

So, a quick explanation: the work is done on the back of a used envelope with the glue and the brand name revealed at the top, which is an obvious 'mistake'. The cut-and-paste limbs are in the wrong place (more mistakes) and are not matched in size (oh dear!) and the head and one arm form an oversized phallus shape on this rolling nightmare-type figure. All is connected by the central cog. A single flexed arm appears to punch a red sphere which is a symbol of strength or aggression. A diagonal line loosely anchors the whole thing. This is a war-like, machine-like entity but it is also comical and kind of silly, which war is in so many ways.

Anyway it's my favourite piece of work from this year; just thought I'd let you know.

It's been a while since I've done any paper collage but I have been doing other things such as submitting a piece of digital collage for Timglaset 6, a great arts publication produced in Sweden. I'm really looking forward to seeing my work in there and will share more information about this when it's published.

Also this year I took part in an exhibition with the Tunnel art collective. Their next show is called Mercerism, at The Crypt in London. However, I haven't been doing much else so it's with great pleasure that I have gone back to doing some work with paper collage; when it's successful I think it is one of the best ways of working and can surprise the maker as much as the viewer with the result.

In our last show with the Tunnel collective Robin and I made some works together which was great fun and surprised us both in the sense that the work really was like some sort of progeny. We brought it forth into the world, kicking and screaming, with a character all of its own; not like our individual work at all. Somewhat punky and irreverent elements emerged in all the works we made under the collective name of 'WE' using materials such as newspaper, hardboard, PVA glue and acrylic paint.

This work was shown at the 'Hunger' exhibition that we had late last year with the Tunnel collective and now that we are in another show (Waterstones, Gower St, until 12th April) I remembered that I had not shown this work since, so here it is and it looks great hanging on our newly painted grey wall in the studio (Robin's bedroom).

I want to continue making some work together so we can learn from each other's strengths and continue to be surprised by the results.
